Devils Bridge on the River Arda - The Eastern Rhodope Mountains

Devils Bridge, proclaimed monument of culture during 1984, forms part of the ancient road connecting the lowlands of Thrace with the north Aegean Sea coast. It is not certain when the Dyavolski most was built, with various sources stating from the 14th to the early 17th century. The bridge, the largest and best known of its kind in the Rhodopes, is 56 m (183.7 ft) long and has three arches, but also features holes with small semicircular arches to read water level. The stunning structure has a width of 3.5 m (11.5 ft) and its main arch is 11.5 m (37.7 ft) high.

Located approximately 16km upstream from Melanya spanning the River Arda, Devils Bridge delivers a day trip in many flavours for our guests. The leisurely option starts with a spectacular drive to Ardino that offers some breathtaking photo opportunities along the way. Park up in Ardino and enjoy a coffee at one of the numerous cafes adjoining the square before driving to the bridge. For the more energetic guest, finding your way to Devils Bridge from Melanya comes in two options. Leave the house on foot and walk the 13km along the mountain track through forgotten villages before heading down towards the river. The last few kilometres down to the bridge are not for the faint hearted so we also offer to drive guests to the closest point on the track. Experienced walkers with mountain walking experience can leave the house after an early breakfast to be collected by car in Ardino in the evening.
